Caravan Solar & Off-Grid Upgrades in Hobart

Tasmania has some of the best free camping in the country — but only if your van's power system can keep up. Undersized solar and old lead-acid batteries turn a five-night stay into a two-night one.

We design and install solar and off-grid upgrades that actually work in Tasmanian conditions: shorter winter days, overcast weather and cold-weather battery performance all built into the sizing.

What's included

Every solar & off-grid upgrades job covers

Roof-mounted solar

Fixed panels mounted, sealed and wired into a properly sized regulator.

Portable solar

Anderson-plug inputs for portable panels when you can't park in the sun.

MPPT regulators

Correctly sized MPPT regulators for maximum charge in low-light conditions.

Battery upgrades

AGM or lithium battery packs sized to your real usage and storage.

DC-DC chargers

Redarc, Victron and similar chargers wired for solar and alternator input.

Monitoring

Battery monitors so you always know your true state of charge.

Why it matters

Why this service is worth doing properly

  • Winter sun in Tasmania is a fraction of summer sun — systems sized for Queensland don't cut it here.
  • Lithium batteries can more than double your usable capacity for the same weight and space.
  • A DC-DC charger protects your battery and gets a proper charge on short driving days.

FAQs

Solar & Off-Grid Upgrades — your questions

How much solar do I need on my caravan?+

It depends on your fridge, lights, water pump and how long you camp off-grid. As a rough guide, most weekenders are happy with 200–300W; extended off-grid touring usually needs 400W+ plus lithium storage.

Should I upgrade to lithium?+

Lithium gives you roughly double the usable capacity of AGM for the same weight, and lasts 3–5 times longer. It's a big-ticket upgrade, but usually the right one if you camp off-grid regularly.

Can you install solar without drilling roof holes?+

Sometimes — using adhesive mounts on suitable panels. Most fixed installs still need bolts through the roof, correctly sealed.
